Foundations June 2019 (Cohort 18)

Ivy Walker · March 7, 2019

Welcome!!!

This is your online classroom area for the Foundations Modules.

When a cohort starts the NCC training they begin with the four Foundation Modules. These modules are offered in sequence and complete the first semester of the program. Once completed, the cohort moves on to the ToolBox Modules where students practice and enhance the foundational skills learned during the Foundation Modules. There are three major categories of learning goals that make up the Foundation Modules:

  • Nature-Connection and Relationship
  • Coaching Competencies
  • Transformational Guiding Competencies

Nature-Connection and Relationship:

Nature-Connection is a state of mind, a way of being.  It is accessible to all people.  It is our birth-right. All our senses are wired for it, our brains and bodies are wired for it.  Nature-connection practices reminds that Nature is the real healer/teacher. We as Nature-Connected Coaches and Guides are facilitators.  Additionally, through our own connected relationship with nature we can learn a ton about how to show-up in the coaching/guiding relationships we share with our clients.

Coaching Competencies:

Professional Coaching is a non-clinical modality for supporting change and growth in clients.  It’s competencies are applicable to many different types of clients such as life-coaching clients, businesses, personal relationships, executives, etc.  The NCC program focus on life-coaching, and during the foundation modules we learn what is expected of us as Professional Coaches while discovering our unique “Coaching Presence”

Transformational Guiding Competencies:

These competencies are what make the NCC work unique from other forms of coaching and guiding. Skills like Deep Listening, Ceremony Facilitation, and Nature as the Guide are not taught anywhere else, or in the same way. Honing these skills will separate you from the rest of the coaches and guides out there, increasing your effectiveness and the power of your sessions with your clients.

You will be given a copy at the start of the program, but feel free to download a copy of the competencies.

  • Below is an outline of different steps involved in completing this part of the training.
  • Below that is a text box that connects you to the group discussion area. Anything you enter into that text area will be shared with the group, similar to a news feed in Facebook.

      hi Everyone!!

I am Melody. I live in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. I’ve lived here since 2005 when I moved from Ontario. I have learned as much as I can through EBI’s online courses, and I am excited to meet everyone in person in June!! I am super stoked to be EBI’s first NCC Canadian student!!
It took a lot of planning and considerations to get myself signed up for the NCC certification course because I am a single mom to my almost 7-year-old daughter Jennifer.
I have a background in horticulture and have started my business, FirReal Nature Connections where I currently offer Forest Bathing and coaching walks. I also do landscaping.

    Hi Everyone!

I’m Amber, I live in northern Maine and I’m currently a full-time professor in Construction Engineering Technology. I’m also a single mom to a super smart three year old boy. I’m excited about NCC and plan to transition from my current position into a full-time coach. My job is fun, but this feels like my calling. I can’t wait to start and I’m excited to meet all of you!

Ivy, I noticed some of the reading listed. Is there are list of books we need to purchase?

    Hi Everyone!

I wasn’t able to be on the live orientation call, so I wanted to introduce myself and let you all know how excited I am to meet you. I plan at the next call so we can meet closer to face-to-face!

My background coming to EBI has been through many hills and valleys. I was actively searching out coaching programs online when I came upon EBI and immediately recognized my dream program with the opportunity to focus on nature and more depth work. I’m excited about the creative opportunities on a personal and professional level here. I am staying really open at this point about where I would like to focus my work with others. I really don’t know! I just know I want to connect and be with those I can serve best, whoever they are. I’m drawn to a wide variety of people with various backgrounds, but I prefer to hang out in the deeper end of processing life, yet also enjoy the immediately practical stuff, so…I guess all is to say I’m taking this adventure on by just showing up and putting myself into the work in front of me! Over the past year I’ve envisioned and sat with different “programs” and offerings I’d like to provide, but again, in recent months I’m really connecting more with the flux and flow so am just really open to where this goes. Some populations I might like are those experiencing chronic pain, life transitions, grief, and those familiar with life-changing traumas. But my ultimate interest is really just on connecting with people willing to explore life, and are looking for how to fully live and love it.

In the past I worked as a massage therapist (briefly) and more recently became a Yoga Teacher (although not currently teaching). I am trained in a specific type of yoga called Yoga Nidra through the Integrative Restoration Institute (iRest) which really is what led me to actualize the path of becoming a coach. My focus is on embodiment and connection, rather than physical fitness, per say.

Last, but definitely not least, I am a mom to two daughters ages 20 and 7 (she’ll be 8 by the time our training starts!)

Looking forward to this leg of the journey, nervous but ready.

    See you soon! Heather

I hope this ends en in the correct spot..

I am looking into booking my flights to Gunnison and am wondering if everyone else has and if we will be on the same plane. At this point it looks like I will be taking the 15:55 from Denver, arriving at Gunnison at 17:02pm

    Anyone else?

      Hi Melody!

It would be cool if we were on the same incoming flight! What airline are you flying? I haven’t booked my flight yet. I think I will be flying Delta? I didn’t know the route would take us to Denver first, and then onto Gunnison.

Hi Heather. The flights I looked at were on United. A few of us were talking about maybe carpooling from Denver. I’m not sure I’d get there on time though/ by noon on the 21st. Where are you coming from?

Hello Melody, I booked my ticket a couple days ago. I will be flying directly to Gunnison, on United, leaving Denver at 15:55, arriving at Gunnison at 17:02pm. We will be on the same flight! 🙂

Hi Nadine! I haven’t booked my flights yet. I’m still trying to figure out if I can get to the Seattle airport to catch that flight. I am considering maybe carpooling with EBI from Denver. I am glad to hear that if I do get that flight I’ll have some company 🙂

            6:15PM on Friday.
It took me the whole weekend to evaluate all the options. The flight to Gunnison is at least twice++ as much as flying into Denver. But then I could not find any lodging in Boulder that was reasonably priced. Even AirB&B was $100 for a night. And now I will just leave on Friday instead of Thursday. Happy planning!

Possibly Nadine. I just keep finding more options, so I will go talk to the travel agent tomorrow to get some help. At this point, I believe I will be flying into Gunnison, and carpooling back to Denver to fly home since there doesn’t seem to be a good flight out of Gunnison for me on the 28th. And yes the price is double to Gunnison!! I had a few different options of where to depart from on this end but getting to those on time could be tricky, and a few hours of driving. I sent you a Facebook message too if you’d like to connect there as well. 🙂

Or you could stay overnight in Gunnisson, I had found a hostel for $25 a night or a hotel for about $50, and fly out the next day, I believe there is a 11AM flight out of Gunnisson. And Gunnisson is so small so could even walk downtown from the airport.

Good to know that you will be coming into Gunnison, Nadine! When I have a picture of all the travel arrangements for students arriving into Gunnsion Airport, I will figure out a time to meet in Gunnison and have someone from EBI pick you all up. 🙂

I booked my flights today! I will have to fly in a little early (on the 20th) because there are limited flights from the northeast and I couldn’t get there early enough on the 21st to make it to Boulder before noon. I found an inexpensive airbnb in Boulder for the night of the 20th, but still need to arrange my lodging when we return on the 28th. Does anyone want to split a hotel/airbnb in Boulder on the 28th?

Hi Amber, It looks like I will be flying in on the 20th as well. I’m wondering if there is room at the airBnB for one more on the 20th – I’m happy to split it with you?. I’m not sure yet about the 28th. I should know by the end of the week. THANKS

Hi Shari! The airbnb is a single room with either a queen or a double bed. If you’re cool with that, you’re more than welcome to join me (I’ll have to confirm with the booking, but I don’t see it being a problem). I can send you more info on the place if you’d like. It looks like a cute place, had great reviews, and was $68.97 after fees 🙂

What flights are you on? I’m flying Bangor->Newark->Denver

Thanks Amber, Sounds like a great find. I haven’t booked my flight yet. What time are you landing? I’ll see if I can make the timing work for us to meet at the airport…we can travel to Boulder together?? I may be staying with a friend for the weekend after class ends. I need to confirm with her before I book my flights. Will get that done in the next couple of days and will confirm with you. I’ll probably fly Southwest

I’m not familiar with the airport but you can call me when you land so we can find each other. Let’s connect before that and get comfortable with the details. My cell phone is: 203-530-3781
I’m looking forward to connecting and really appreciate your sharing the airbnb, etc….

Hello everyone, I am Nadine, I live in Portland Oregon, but I was born and raised in France. I am an avid hiker and backpacker and the Pacific Northwest has been my backyard for 30 years. I teach self-defense for women with the Portland Police Bureau. I also teach safety motorcycle classes with Portland State University. I am currently reconnecting with sailing, a long lost love of mine. My partner of 12 years is a philosopher and she lives in beautiful Bordeaux, France.

I registered to the NCC because I gave myself two years to exit my no-longer fulfilling, yet comfortable corporate career. I am looking to create a new chapter in my Life, where I could capitalize on my passion and my strengths. I cannot honestly say that I know where I am going or what it will look like. It does make me super uncomfortable, but I am up for the Ride of my Life!!

I am looking forward to meeting all of you in person.

Hi All, I’m Shari from Northwest Connecticut. It’s great to connect and begin to get to know everyone. My Bachelors is in Natural Resource Conservation, but I’ve been a massage therapist for the last 30+ years and a health educator for 10+ years. I thought I was on a “path with heart”, assisting graduate students in becoming the change they wanted to see in the world as they discovered and followed their inner passion, while I simultaneously was building a program and community with a focus on positive and conscious evolution through the lens of integrative health and healing. When the leadership changed along with the vision and mission of the Institute I suddenly found myself with a direction, but no path. After much searching inwardly and outwardly, I decided to return to my roots, and I discovered EBI. The path feels right the goal is still fuzzy, though I know I want to work with children and families in developing self-awareness, self-responsibility and connection to source (nature). I trust the clarity will come as I continue to follow the path that beckons through the NCC program. In the meantime I am loving the learning and growth that is happening and I’m excited to being sharing the journey with all of you.

    Hi everyone,
Thanks for sharing your stories thus far. Keep ’em coming! 🙂

I’ve had a few emails from this cohort about camping gear and reading. I thought to drop in some answers here for all of you.

Here is a link for the camping gear list. Please let me know if you are having issues collecting the right gear or have concerns about bringing it– especially for those flying. We could explore creative options from shipping to lending you something.

About reading: Here’s the link for the NCC reading list. The two most important books for Foundations are: Coyote’s Guide and Coaching Skills. You are not expected to read everything before you arrive. However, you may want to familiarize yourself with these books. And check in with yourself about your learning style– perhaps reading before will have you more at ease….or maybe reading more after the Foundations will help you to incorporate the information. Consider your preference and also your schedule. As we work through the online component of the Foundation modules, there will be some additional reading in the form of PDFs (provided). There is one week between online posts reserved for reading. We’ll go over exactly how this works when we are together at the Foundations. I hope this information helps you to choose how you would like to approach reading before we meet. Please feel free to ask more questions about reading or other topics. 🙂

      Hi Ivy,
The reading list has the 3rd edition of the Coaching Skills book . Is it okay that I purchased the 2016, 4th edition? It’s also the Southern Methodist University version, a whole lot cheaper ($7.00) and from what I can see there is no difference, except that they accidentally printed chapter 4 twice!!

Hello Ivy, Looking at the Personal Packing List you sent us. The link for the solo tarp is apparently no longer available.
Solo tarp… it is referring to be a tarp to be placed on the ground (usually under the tent for protection), or is it rather a tarp tent, which we would lay under? Thank you for the clarification.

Hi! I feel like I am late to the party – but SO glad I am here! After reading the above and viewing the videos of the calls I have missed I feel like I know you all already! I am honored and very excited to be walking this part of our journey together. A little about myself, my name is Sheri. I live in Centennial, CO, with my husband, an amazing high school teacher and we have 2 sons, 19 and nearly 16. I currently work part-time at my church as a Small Group Ministry Director and Youth & Family Ministry Coordinator. I also do a lot with our service and outreach. I am passionate about walking with those seeking to live life to their fullest expression. Coaching them to finding the balance necessary for that possibility. Also have a heart for accompanying those working through dark times and struggles, as we all do. That is when we learn and grow the most. I was drawn to EBI because of the Nature (external and internal) Connection (with soul, nature and others) aspect it brings to coaching. I had been feeling called to coaching for some time (a long time) and when I learned of Nature-Connected Coaching and EBI, it all clicked. It has taken me getting my feet wet with a few online classes and getting clear through my own soul direction that it is time to take these next steps and what an igniting of my light has that decision made! Excited to meet you all in person in June, especially those I have already met via zoom. See you on the next call.

An offer, if anyone is flying into Denver on the morning of the 21st and would like a ride to Boulder for the carpool to Gunnison I would be happy to pick up. I live about 25 mins from the Denver airport and about an hour from Boulder. I suppose if you fly in the day before and find it easier to stay near the airport than getting to Boulder, that could work too.

Keep me posted on your plans. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

    Hi All,
A few of you have asked– so I am dropping this info here in the Forum. You may have noticed from your email that the EBI Community Council Fire online meeting has been rescheduled from this Friday to now occur on June 17 at 6pm MDT.

Our Foundations Orientation meeting is still scheduled for this Friday, May 17 at 10am MDT. They are not the same meeting. Hope to see you at one or both. 🙂 The Foundations meeting will be recorded and posted here.

    Best, Ivy
